This week, Senate Republicans proposed the HEALS Act, their new stimulus package for coronavirus recovery.
The Health, Economic Assistance, Liability and Schools, or HEALS, Act includes $1,200 stimulus checks for eligible Americans, a reduction in unemployment payments from $600 a week to $200 a week and an additional $190 billion in funding for the Paycheck Protection Program. The act would also allow business owners to take a temporary 100% tax deduction on business meals, which would encourage dining out.
However, despite intense lobbying from restaurant advocacy groups, the package offered no specific restaurant industry relief.
We also spoke with a Black restaurateur, Karl Franz Williams, about how the pandemic has changed his business. In his video interview, Williams explains that the coronavirus pandemic has only increased the racial disparity in restaurant ownership because Black restaurateurs have always had a harder time gaining access to capital, something that has only worsened with even the big restaurant players asking for money or shuttering.
And more restaurateurs have sued their insurers for denial of COVID-19 coverage. This week, it was Fabio Trabocchi and Robert Wiedmaier, representing Fiola Holdings LLC and RW Restaurant Group respectively.
